Maybe I’m strange, but my favorite books to read have always been cookbooks. Even as a small child, I would spend rainy Saturday afternoons curled up on the couch with a stack of my mother’s cookbooks in front of me. I would devour them, page by page, using little strips of torn notebook paper to bookmark the ones that I wanted to make. Few of them rarely made it to the actual kitchen, but I loved reading the recipe descriptions and soaking up the pictures of the finished products. I’ve carried my love of reading cookbooks into adulthood, except now, almost all of them make it into the production stage. So, it was no surprise when I sat down one day last week with Elizabeth Nyland’s (of Guilty Kitchen fame) new cookbook, Cooking With Coconut Oil: Gluten-Free, Grain-Free Recipes For Good Living. I’m jealous. Really, really jealous. Most of you know I had a miserable pregnancy. Everything that could go wrong did—and I mean, everything. Extended bed rest, hemorrhaging, hemorrhoids, depression, carpel tunnel, pre-eclampsia, early delivery, no milk production—I was a mess. I spent over ten years trying to get pregnant, and then spent the entire pregnancy in fear that I would lose the babies. I’ve always loved coffee with cream. Going Paleo meant I had to ditch it and get used to the taste of black coffee. To be honest, I never could. Should I have stopped drinking coffee altogether at that point? Probably—but I didn’t. I soldiered on, so great was my addiction, and began experimenting instead. I tried Bulletproof Coffee, Egg Coffee, coconut oil, and different spices. The results were pretty good but it was just missing one key ingredient, which I couldn’t put my finger on. Thankfully I found it at AHS13 in Atlanta. The vendors at events like these are incredible. There was everything from tallow lip balm to kombucha starters—a veritable cornucopia of Paleo delights. One table that really caught my eye was the Pure Indian Food’s Ghee display. I’ve always loved and used ghee, but it’s hard to find good sources of it. Here, starring me in the face, was organic, grass-fed ghee—gallons of it. Not only that, there was coffee too, with a little sign saying “try some ghee in me!” And so I did. I’ve had Primal Cravings by Megan McCullough Keatley and Brandon Keatley at my house for nearly two months now and have been holding off writing a review because I wasn’t sure exactly what to say. I still have really mixed feelings. I was really excited to receive the book. My kids are always clamoring for foods that their peers eat and I’m not always able to make them. However, over the four and a half years that I’ve been Primal, I’ve come up with substitutions for almost everything they want, including pizza crust, crackers and rolls. I already make my own cake, ice cream, soda, beef jerky, cookies, mayonnaise, salad dressings, waffles, popsicles, tomato-free pizza and spaghetti sauce, and pasta. To be fair, there really aren’t a lot of recipes out there that can impress me. (Here’s one for waffles from the Paleo Parents that did.) That being said, I’m always on the look out for recipes that use new and different seasonings, or that combine different gluten-free flours to come up with amazing new combinations. I had the pleasure of meeting Darryl Edwards at PaleoFX last year. I was very impressed with his enthusiasm and love for Primal movement. Darryl made a huge impression on me. One of the things that upsets me the most whenever I’m in a book store is the prominent position of stupid books like Eat This, Not That by David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding. I flipped through it to see what the authors had to say and went through all five stages of grief within a one-minute period: 1. Denial: No. Noooooo. No way are you telling me that I should choose Breyer’s ice cream over Haagen-Daas. Why the hell would I want a lower fat content, added stabilizers and unpronounceable chemicals?! And you’re telling me the reason that the Dairy Queen Banana Split is healthier is because it has a freakin’ banana in it?! What about the high fructose corn syrup poured all over the top?! I can’t believe that people would fall for this!! 2. Anger: O.M.F.G. This book is going to perpetuate the obesity epidemic in this country and isn’t going to help ANYONE. It just validates people’s shitty choices and makes them feel good about ordering a chicken burger with fries and a diet soda instead of the hamburger with fries and regular soda. W.T.F. 3. My Standards Sometimes people send me things to sample. Usually they’re hoping for a review — some of them ask, some of them don’t. Usually they’re hoping I’ll at least pass on a message to you, dear Reader, and help promote their company. You can see I don’t actually post that many reviews. I try to live by the adage, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” If I don’t believe in a product or actually use it myself, I certainly don’t advertise for it. I don’t care how much money I can make, I refuse to sell out. My integrity means everything to me. Paleo companies are popping up all over the place, as Paleo becomes the newest and greatest thing since gluten-free sliced bread. Even some Vegans are converting. I’ve received samples from companies claiming to be Paleo but when I read the ingredients on their flashy packaging, I’ve been bitterly disappointed.
